Many restoration and stewardship efforts took place this summer and are continuing this fall in Allouez Bay. Projects include invasive plant management for purple loosestrife and cattails (narrowleaf and hybrid), bird and vegetation surveys, and community engagement efforts like River Revival events hosted by the St. Louis River Alliance.

The St. Louis River Alliance hosted the final River Revival event of the 2026 series. The event centered on Ishkode (fire in Ojibwemowin) and its relationship with the land and people on Wisconsin Point. Attendees were able to walk to the site of the first cultural prescribed fire on the Point in November 2025 in over 150 years.

Throughout 2025 and 2026, the St. Louis River Alliance has worked alongside the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Minnesota Land Trust to connect our community with restoration and planning efforts at Allouez Bay and Wisconsin Point. Through community conversations, our River Activities Questionnaire, and River Revival events, we've learned more about what these special places mean to you and how we can make it easier for everyone to get involved.

As our grant-funded engagement effort wraps up, we're sharing what we heard, how your feedback helped shape our work, and what's next. The restoration work and conversations don't end here, and we hope you'll continue to be part of them!

Volunteers joined the St. Louis River Alliance and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to plant 4,200 lbs of Manoomin (wild rice) in sections of the St. Louis River Estuary. Locations included Allouez Bay and Kingsbury Bay.

Planning continues for future public access at the 44th Avenue waterfront in Superior. New concept posters from the August 24 Community Design Workshop are now available for review, and we want to hear what you think. Thank you to everyone who attended the August River Revival event on Thursday, August 20th at the Superior Public Library. Attendees learned about different species of cattail in the St. Louis River Estuary and how to weave cattail mats.

The next opportunity to help plan the future of the 44th Ave E Dock is here! Join the St. Louis River Alliance, the City of Superior, and Stantec on Monday, August 24, from 5:00–6:30 p.m. for an interactive community design workshop.

More than 70 community members joined us on June 18 to explore the future of the 44th Ave. E Dock in Superior and share their ideas for this unique waterfront space. As the City of Superior begins planning for the 22-acre site, community input will help shape future concepts for recreation, access, and amenities. Planning is still in its early stages, and there is still time to get involved. Take the community survey, learn more about the project, and sign up for updates as we work together to create a welcoming, shared-use waterfront for future generations.

Restoration projects can improve more than habitat—they can also benefit local communities. In partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, University of Minnesota Duluth students analyzed community feedback about Allouez Bay to identify priorities, barriers to access, and ways to measure how restoration improves recreation, safety, and connections to the St. Louis River.

The St. Louis River Alliance is excited to help lead community engagement efforts for the 44th Avenue East Waterfront Access Project, a community-driven effort to reimagine a former industrial dock on Allouez Bay as a welcoming public waterfront space. In partnership with the City of Superior, upcoming outreach efforts will include neighborhood yard signs, community events, and a public survey to gather ideas for the future of the site. Community members can also join the June 18 “Old Dock, New Era” field tour to explore the waterfront and help shape its future through public input.

The 2025 Wisconsin Point Visitor Use Assessment report is now available, sharing community insights on how people use, value, and connect with the Point. Findings will help guide future planning, resilience efforts, and decisions to protect its natural character, cultural significance, and public access.
