GIVE! Round Up Recipient @ Whole Foods
This September, when you shop at Whole Foods Co-op Duluth, you have the power to protect and celebrate one of our region’s most vital natural resources—the St. Louis River. We’re thrilled to announce that the St. Louis River Alliance is the GIVE! Round Up at the Register recipient for the entire month of September.

Starry Skies @ Woodstock Bay (FOLSR Event)
The St. Louis River Alliance is excited to join the Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve (FOLSR), Starry Skies North, DarkSky Wisconsin, and the Arrowhead Astronomical Society! Join us for an evening of wonder as we learn about the astronomy and the effects of light pollution, and appreciate our beautiful night sky together. This event is part of Starry Skies North “Celebrate the Night Sky Week” 2025.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place on Saturday, September 13 at 8:00pm.

Riverfront Memories: Photos & Storytelling
This special gathering invites you to connect to the St. Louis River through shared stories and photography. Mark your calendars for free family-friendly activities, games, crafts, reflective prompts, Stories of the River, tea, a fire, and so much more!

Full Moon Gathering on Wisconsin Point
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and project partners for a free family-friendly evening of storytelling and celebration on Wisconsin Point.
Come explore the Bear Creek Trail, discover recent restoration projects along the Point, and hear Ojibwe stories under the full moon while gathered around a fire.
Open to all, bring your own chair and snacks.

Volunteer Manoomin/Wild Rice Planting (Kingsbury Bay, Duluth)
The St. Louis River Alliance is excited to host our annual volunteer manoomin/wild rice planting on the St. Louis River! This year we will be seeding on two days at two different locations.
Tuesday, September 9 from 8-1 p.m. Allouez Bay in Superior, launching from Wisconsin Point Lot 2 or Bunge Dock in Superior (location will depend on wind/weather)
Friday, September 12 from 8-1 p.m. Kingsbury Bay in Duluth, launching from Spirit Lake Marina (121 Spring Street, Duluth)
Volunteers will help distribute up to 750 pounds of wild rice seed at each site by canoe, supporting the ecological and cultural restoration of this important waterway. Space is limited to 10–12 volunteers per day, so early registration is encouraged.

Piping Plover Work Day at Wisconsin Point Wildlife Sanctuary
Calling all volunteers! Join the St. Louis River Alliance on Friday, August 22nd from 4-7 p.m. for a volunteer cleanup day at the Piping Plover Habitat Site at the Wisconsin Point Wildlife Sanctuary. Come lend a hand however your schedule allows.
We will be handling non-local invasive species such as tansy, as well as piling up and removing woody debris along the shoreline. It will be a fun work day, with a site tour included.

Whether you're a first-time paddler or a seasoned river explorer, this event will help you plan safe and successful outings on the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail. We’ll cover essential topics such as route selection, access points, gear recommendations, safety tips, and wind and weather considerations.

Community Paddle
Join our free, family-friendly Community Paddle! All non-motorized watercrafts are allowed (canoe, kayak, standup paddle board, etc.) and community members are encouraged to bring their own gear if they have it. The St. Louis River Alliance will provide 12 canoes, PFDs, and paddles for free to the first registered attendees in need of gear.
Come explore one of the newly designated routes of the stunning St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail and learn about the Area of Concern cleanup efforts that have made this area a safer place to recreate. Whether you’re a new or seasoned paddler, this trip is a fantastic chance to immerse yourself in the river’s breathtaking beauty.

Ecology Paddle
This beginner friendly paddling event will include a focus on River Ecology. UMD Recreational Sports Outdoor Program will provide gear and beginner paddle stroke instruction before getting the group on the water. The St. Louis River Alliance will provide a guided paddle as we explore the beautiful St. Louis River. This event is free and open to the public, with ages 8+ welcomed.
All gear will be provided including life jackets, canoes, and paddles. No prior paddle experience necessary!

Water Wednesday at Harrison Community Center (final event in the series)
Join the St. Louis River Alliance for a monthly series called ‘Water Wednesdays’ to swap stories with friends, community members, and harbor relationships around the river.
We will have coffee, fruit options, and donuts to enjoy! Only two Water Wednesdays left!

Biking the Cross-City Trail: An Area of Concern Tour
During this community ride we’ll explore the scenic beauty of the St. Louis River corridor while learning about remediation and restoration projects that have helped cleanup the river.
This event is free and open to the public. We will have limited gear available for use (bikes/helmets) for registered attendees, though we only have access to adult bikes. The community is encouraged to bring their own wheels if they have them.

Join the St. Louis River Alliance for a monthly series called ‘Water Wednesdays’ to swap stories with friends, community members, and harbor relationships around the river. There are only two events left in the series, June and July!
Beginner Fishing Along the St. Louis River
Designed especially for first-time anglers, this program is perfect for beginners and families. No experience necessary! Come learn the basics of casting into the water, baiting your hook, fish identification, and more. This will be based on land and we will meet and park near Perch Lake Park Fishing Pier. Registration is necessary.

From River Bottom to Kitchen Table: Links in the Estuary Food Chain
**FREE, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Come learn how critters that live in our riverbed form the foundation of the food chain and how they are beginning to recover after the completion of several remediation and restoration projects. Hear reflections from a local resident on what fishing was like before the cleanup efforts began and the changes they've seen in the river since. Meet representatives of area fishing groups and fisheries managers and ask them your fishy questions, share fish tales, and learn about fishing opportunities in the estuary. Even if you don’t fish, the story behind this food chain will intrigue you.

Woodstock Bay Spring Cleanup
Join the St. Louis River Alliance on Wednesday, April 23 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for a volunteer cleanup event at Woodstock Bay Public Landing in Superior, Wisconsin in celebration of Earth Day!

Join the St. Louis River Alliance and Naawakwe William Howes III for Babaa-ayaang Chigami-ziibing 'Going About the St. Louis River' Ojibwe Place Names on Monday, March 10 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Morgan Park Community Center (1242 88th Ave W, Duluth, MN 55808).

Paddle Trip Planning + Navigation on the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and UMD’s Recreational Sports Outdoor Program (RSOP) for an exciting Paddle Trip Planning + Navigation Event on February 25 from 5-8 p.m.
Whether you're a seasoned paddler or a first-time explorer, this event will cover essential topics such as route selection, access points, gear recommendations, safety tips, and wind and weather considerations. All participants will be provided a free St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail map to follow along with as we practice navigating with a compass. Collectively we will fill out a float plan and discuss the importance of flexibility when planning a safe paddle trip.

Starry Skies Along the St. Louis River
This event has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 9th.
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and amateur astronomer Bob King on Monday, December 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to learn about the importance of dark skies along the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail. We will park at the Morgan Park Community Center (1242 88th Ave W, Duluth) and walk over to the Spirit Lake Delta Cap (formerly slag point) to explore seasonal constellations and planets, and ways we can preserve starry skies for nocturnal animal habitat and future generations. Afterward, we'll look at Jupiter and Saturn through the telescope.

The River Talks: Restored Connection to a River in Recovery
From degradation to paddling destination, the St. Louis River Estuary is undergoing an inspiring transformation. Since the designation of the St. Louis River Estuary Area of Concern (AOC) in 1987, many partners have collaborated to clean up the river. The impact of this work is becoming clear, and the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail is proof of that change. Come learn about improved access to the water and future goals for helping (re)connect the community to this beautiful waterway.

Fall River Connection Plant Walk
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and Valerie Ross Zhaawendaagozikwe on Sunday, September 15th from 1-2:30 p.m. for a Fall River Connection Plant Walk. Come with us as we explore the diverse flora of Thomson Reservoir, learning about the plants, their characteristics and uses, and how to sustainably harvest them so they stick around for us and future generations. This will not be a foraging walk, but rather an opportunity to connect with and build appreciation for all that grows throughout the estuary.

Volunteers Needed: Annual Manoomin (Wild Rice) Planting
Join the St. Louis River Alliance for our annual volunteer wild rice planting at Kingsbury Bay on the St. Louis River! Nearly 500 pounds of manoomin, or wild rice seed, will be planted on Thursday, September 12th from approx. 8:30-11:30 a.m. leaving from Spirit Lake Marina located at 121 Spring Street in Duluth.

Annual Canoe + Paddle Trip

River Connection Train Ride
The St. Louis River Alliance invites you to enjoy a free, family-friendly River Connection Train Ride on Thursday, September 5th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Hop on board the historic Lake Superior Mississippi Railroad and travel west with spectacular views of the St. Louis River.

Volunteer with Master Naturalists at Piping Plover Habitat
Join Project Leader Mikayla Erickson, and a small group of Master Naturalists on Sunday, August 25th from 1:00-3:00 PM for a volunteer cleanup day on the Piping Plover Wildlife Sanctuary at Wisconsin Point.

Dwight's Point Sea Kayak Paddle + Lunch
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and UMD Recreation Sports Outdoor Program (RSOP) for an afternoon of exploring the newly designated St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail! On Sunday, August 4th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. we will paddle along towering white pines on steep clay embankments, passing lily pads in bloom and birds basking in their summer quarters. Come see, smell, and hear the flora and fauna who call the estuary home.

Beginner Paddling + Water Safety Event
Join the St. Louis River Alliance and UMD Recreation Sports Outdoor Program (UMD RSOP) on Wednesday, July 24th from 5:00-7:30 p.m. for a hands-on, free Beginner Paddling & Water Safety River Connection event hosted at Munger Landing (Clyde Ave, Duluth, MN 55808). All gear will be provided including life jackets, canoes, and paddles. No prior paddle experience necessary.

Woody Debris Removal @ Piping Plover Habitat *Weather Dependent*
The St. Louis River Alliance is in need of volunteers throughout the month of July to assist with managing woody debris on the Piping Plover Site in Wisconsin. Extreme rain events have pushed substantial amounts of driftwood onto the shoreline this season. Come and lend a hand if your schedule allows on July 18th, AND/OR July 23rd!
This will be a really fun, hands-on experience! Gloves. shovels, and rakes will be provided. Please bring your own equipment/materials if you have them. Long pants and shirts recommended.
Participants are strongly encouraged to email Mikayla, at projectleader@stlouisriver.org if they are interested in helping for any of these volunteer days due to potential weather conflicts and equipment needs.

Spotted Knapweed Pull @ Piping Plover Habitat
Calling all volunteers! Come lend a hand however your schedule allows and join the St. Louis River Alliance on Thursday, July 11th and/or Friday, July 12th from 2:00-6:00pm
During this volunteer maintenance day, we will be handling non-local invasive species such as spotted knapweed and possibly tansy in the Piping Plover nesting area, and other targeted areas on Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary. If the wind and weather cooperates, we will be managing the invasives by burning them on site.

Billings Drive Spring Cleanup
Join the St. Louis River Alliance on Wednesday, June 12th from 4:30-6:30 p.m. for a volunteer clean up event along Billings Drive in Superior, Wisconsin! Come when you want and stay as long (or as little) as you'd like. Please check in with SLRA staff at the Superior Municipal Forest Disc Golf Lot (directions below). We will collect litter from the Disc Golf course all the way to Highway 105.
