Water Rescue: the decline and rebirth of the St. Louis River (WDIO Story & Video)
A new feature from WDIO shares the powerful story of the St. Louis River, from industrial pollution to one of the Great Lakes’ most inspiring restoration successes.
The piece highlights longtime environmental advocate Dave Zentner, partners from the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, agency staff, and Executive Director Kris Eilers of the St. Louis River Alliance Kris Eilers working together to restore habitat, improve water quality, and reconnect people to the river.

Second Grade Field Day on Wisconsin Point (photos)
Twenty-four Washington Elementary second graders joined the St. Louis River Alliance and Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve for a hands-on estuary field day exploring shorebirds, water monitoring, habitat stewardship, and interactive learning at Wisconsin Point and the Estuarium.
Trip Planning & River Orientation Event Recap + Photos
Paddlers gathered April 9 for a free River Orientation & Trip Planning event hosted by St. Louis River Alliance and Minnesota Sea Grant. Participants gained tools, safety tips, and local knowledge to confidently explore the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail this season.

The internationally celebrated Paddling Film Festival World Tour returns to Duluth on May 14 at Zinema Theatres. 2025 Remedial Action Plan Comment Period Now Open (April 13-26)
Share your input on the SLRAOC’s draft 2025 Remedial Action Plan! The annual input opportunity is open from April 13-26, 2026. The RAP and directions for commenting are posted on WDNR’s SLRAOC website. This plan includes details about impairment status, projects and the plan to delist the SLRAOC. Input can be sent to matthew.steiger@wisconsin.gov by April 26.

Allouez Bay Phase 2: Setting Goals for Successful Restoration
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and others, is planning a restoration project in Allouez Bay to reduce wave energy and protect coastal wetlands. The project aims to improve habitat for wildlife, support plant growth, and enhance recreation. Partners are now developing detailed “SMART” goals—specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and timely—to guide design and ensure successful, resilient outcomes.
44th Ave. East Dock on Allouez Bay: Community Outreach to Come!
The St. Louis River Alliance is partnering with the City of Superior to lead community outreach for the 44th Ave East Dock site on Allouez Bay. This planning effort will explore future possibilities for public access while maintaining the site’s current shared uses. Community input will help shape the vision for this historic waterfront space.
The River Speaks: Art of the Estuary | On Display throughout March
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception of The River Speaks: Art of the Estuary at Wussow’s Concert Café on March 5. With more than 22 artists featured and a packed room of community members, the evening celebrated the deep connections people share with the St. Louis River through art, music, poetry, and storytelling.
Wisconsin Point Resiliency Study Overview
Erosion is reshaping Wisconsin Point, a treasured sandbar along Lake Superior. Through the Wisconsin Point Resiliency Study, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and AMI Consulting Engineers, PA are using 2025 field data and advanced modeling to develop sustainable, nature-based solutions that protect habitat, culture, and recreation.
Ice Safety Event (Photos)
Thank you to everyone who joined us at Munger Landing for our ice safety event with the Minnesota DNR. We learned about St. Louis River restoration, ice rescue, and safety tools, enjoyed s’mores by the fire, and took in the winter river. A key takeaway: river ice is unpredictable—always check conditions and never assume it’s the same everywhere.
Winter Walk at Slag Point for Winter Out West (photos)
St. Louis River Alliance staff led a winter walk on Sunday, February 1st starting at the Morgan Park Community Center, and walking down to the Slag Point from Falcon Street. This event was part of the yearly Winter Out West, hosted by Health Equity Northland.

Restoring Wetland Habitat in Allouez Bay: Phase 2 Restoration Update
The Wisconsin DNR and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are evaluating options to restore and protect wetlands in eastern Allouez Bay. Using wave modeling, partners are testing nature-based features to reduce wave energy, support wildlife habitat, and improve resilience—while keeping the main fishing area unchanged.
