The St. Louis River Alliance, in collaboration with the Headwaters Partnership, is gathering your most frequently asked questions about the St. Louis River! Whether it’s about water quality, wildlife, recreation, restoration efforts, all questions are welcomed.
Reconnecting to the St. Louis River
Since the Alliance's very beginning, we have worked hand-in-hand with agencies and tribal partners to create the system and plan for delisting the St. Louis River as an Area of Concern. As time has gone on, we've been able to focus our efforts on reconnecting the community to these newly restored areas.

Paddling Through Restoration: A Look at the Allouez Bay Marsh Bird Habitat Project
On Tuesday, August 5, the St. Louis River Alliance had the opportunity to join fellow partners on a paddle through the Allouez Bay Marsh Bird Habitat Project in Superior, Wisconsin. This unique on-the-water experience allowed us to witness the early progress of an ambitious wetland restoration effort aimed at revitalizing one of the region’s critical coastal marsh ecosystems. Celebrating a Cleaner, Healthier St. Louis River at Munger Landing
On Wednesday, August 5, the St. Louis River Alliance and many dedicated partners gathered at Munger Landing to celebrate a major milestone in the river’s restoration journey. Once one of the most polluted stretches of the river, this area now stands as a testament to years of hard work, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.

Community Paddle (photos)
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Community Paddle on July 24 at Chambers Grove. With all of the recent rain, the river was flowing! Attendees learned the important lessons of staying flexible and respecting the river’s power.
We explored a small sliver of the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail while learning about the Area of Concern (AOC) cleanup efforts that have made the river a cleaner/safer place to recreate. We talked about the manoomin restoration and sturgeon recovery near Chambers Grove, in addition to the historic uses of Chambers Grove.
July Water Wednesday Finale! (photos)
The St. Louis River Alliance Water Trail Staff hosted their fifth and final Water Wednesday event on July 9th, at Harrison Community Center (3002 W 3rd St). With a special guest Tommy, from Minnesota Sea Grant’s, Paddle Safe Twin Ports.
Ecology Paddle (photos)
Saturday July 12th, St. Louis River Alliance staff and City of Duluth staff joined together to teach an ecology themed paddle in the St. Louis River Estuary, out of Munger Landing. UMD RSOP assisted with gear, paddling instructions, and safety escorts on the water.

Biking the Cross City Trail Area of Concern Tour (photos)
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Biking the Cross City Trail Area of Concern Tour event. The evening ride along the Cross City Trail brought participants up close with key restoration and remediation sites while offering a scenic, educational, and engaging experience.

Beginner Fishing River Connection Event Photos
Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in our Beginner Fishing Event with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR)! It was a beautiful day at Perch Lake Landing. It’s inspiring to see so many new anglers—of all ages—casting lines, learning new skills, and connecting with the river. Attendees learned about the Area of Concern cleanup efforts that have made the river a cleaner and safer place to recreate, in addition to basic fish identification, fishing techniques, and stories of the river.
Paddle & Safety Lesson with Harbor City International Students on 5/22
The St. Louis River Alliance hosted 15 Harbor City International Students, and their teacher Mr. Scott on May 22nd, at Spirit Lake Marina.
RSOP Essentials of Kayak + Canoe Training (photos)
On May 28, the entire St. Louis River Alliance team had an incredible hands-on kayak and canoe rescue training with Melody at the UMD’s Recreational Sports Outdoor Program.
We learned about the rules of the nautical road, safety gear, and rescue maneuvers. Everyone suited up and hopped in the cold water to practice cold water exits, the t-rescue, and how to clear water in a sunken vessel. It was an incredible opportunity to bond as a team before a very busy summer, and a reminder of why we love the work we do!

St. Louis River Alliance Recognized as City of Duluth’s Partners of the Year
Last week, on May 14, the St. Louis River Alliance was named Nonprofit Partner of the Year by the City of Duluth Parks Commission!
This recognition celebrates our strong collaboration with the City to help connect the community to the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail. We’re proud of the programs and experiences we offer and the increased visibility we’ve brought to the National Water Trail.

2025 St. Louis River Area of Concern Celebration of Progress (Photos + Presentation)
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at the 2025 St. Louis River Area of Concern (AOC) Celebration of Progress event! This year’s theme, “From River Bottom to Kitchen Table: Links in the Estuary Food Chain,” brought together scientists, storytellers, anglers, advocates, and community members to reflect on the remarkable progress in restoring the St. Louis River estuary and to look ahead at the work still to come.
