Ecology Paddle (photos)
Saturday July 12th, the St. Louis River Alliance partnered with Duluth Parks and Recreation and UMD’s Recreational Sports Outdoor Program (RSOP) to bring paddlers out on the water for a guided tour exploring the St. Louis River’s ecology. After a brief safety instruction and paddle stroke demo provided on land by RSOP, we went out as a group from Munger Landing. It was important to go slow with the air quality, but everyone brought excitement to learn more about the St. Louis River Estuary!
The river provided various exciting natural sightings for the group. We observed Turkey vultures, American crows, Tree swallows, Red-winged blackbirds, ducks, and even a kingfisher! Peter Ray from Duluth Parks & Recreation taught us about cattails, water lilies, and Eurasian watermilfoil for the ecology portion of the event. Our planned paddling route took us behind Tallus Island, and through beaver territory, with lodges along the banks.
Thank you to everyone who came out to learn, and made this event worth while! Scroll through the photos below to see the fun.
