Beginner Fishing River Connection Event Photos
Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in our Beginner Fishing Event with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). It was a beautiful day at Perch Lake Landing - we had a bit of rain followed by some warm sunshine. It’s inspiring to see so many new anglers—of all ages—casting lines, learning new skills, and connecting with the river. Attendees learned about the Area of Concern cleanup efforts that have made the river a cleaner and safer place to recreate, in addition to basic fish identification, fishing techniques, and stories of the river.
We couldn't have done it without our partners! Thank you Alisha Hallam and Fred with MN DNR Fisheries who provided gear, guidance, and fishing expertise; Area of Concern (AOC) Coordinator Barb Huberty and Perch Lake Project Manager Jeramy Pinkerton who shared about the AOC remediation and restoration work; and our awesome volunteers for helping create such a meaningful community event.
This event is one of 16 River Connection events we are hosting in partnership with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, thanks to generous funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. In 2022 we began the project by hosting 6 neighborhood input events to hear from the community on what folks would like to experience along the river and any barriers that kept them from doing it. From that feedback we curated these events, prioritizing those who live in one of the 18 communities adjacent to the St. Louis River. To help reduce some of the barriers shared, we have provided gear and instruction for free. We really want to help people reconnect to the river and feel safe to explore and discover the incredible diversity of the estuary.
