Trip Planning & River Orientation Event Recap + Photos

Preparing for a Safe Season on the St. Louis River Estuary

On April 9, the St. Louis River Alliance and Minnesota Sea Grant welcomed paddlers to Morgan Park Community Center for a free River Orientation & Trip Planning event focused on helping people confidently explore the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail.

With a great turnout of both new and experienced paddlers, the evening provided practical tools and local knowledge to support safe and enjoyable time on the water this season.

Participants learned how to:

  • Choose launch sites and plan routes

  • Prepare for changing weather and river conditions

  • Select appropriate gear

  • Complete a float plan and prioritize paddling safety

Minnesota Sea Grant staff shared important safety considerations, including the value of flexible trip planning and awareness of known drowning hotspots within the estuary. Attendees followed along using a free St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail map, giving them a helpful resource to take home for future adventures.

The event also highlighted the broader story of the St. Louis River Estuary — its ecological significance, ongoing restoration work, and water monitoring efforts led by regional partners such as the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Participants received access to presentation materials, route overview videos for beginner through advanced paddlers, and additional safety and trip-planning resources to continue learning beyond the event.

If you’re interested in planning your own paddle, visit the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail webpage for information on safety essentials, regulations and advisories, suggested routes, itineraries, and local outfitters and guides.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped kick off the paddling season. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

This event was made possible through generous financial support from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the City of Duluth.
