Second Grade Field Day on Wisconsin Point (photos)
The St. Louis River Alliance and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve recently welcomed 24 second-grade students from Washington Elementary School for a full day of hands-on learning and exploration at the Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary and Lake Superior Estuarium.
Students rotated through outdoor learning stations focused on observing, understanding, and caring for the estuary ecosystem. Along the shoreline, they learned about coastal vegetation and how scientists monitor Piping Plovers, exploring how data collection helps protect sensitive shorebird habitat. Using spotting scopes, binoculars, and classroom field kits, students practiced being scientists as they searched for shorebirds and examined the landscape around them.
Each student also spent quiet time in a personal “sit spot,” observing the world around them and reflecting through journaling prompts: I Notice… I Wonder… It Reminds Me of… These moments encouraged curiosity, place-based connection, and thoughtful observation.
Working together, the group helped care for the habitat by completing a shoreline cleanup.
With Reserve staff Ryan and Lauren, students participated in water monitoring through the Rivers2Lake program, collecting data and learning how water connects their community in Cloquet to the larger St. Louis River Estuary and ultimately Lake Superior.
The day concluded at the Welcome to the Estuarium exhibit space, where students explored interactive displays including the Ishkode (fire) exhibit.
It is always a joy to be outside with kids and we loved watching them light up throughout the day!
