Guests gathered in the Morgan Park Community Center parking lot at 4:00pm, before enjoying the evening under the full moon in the riverside neighborhood of Morgan Park. Mikayla started the event by asking guests to share their name, and one thing they love about the St. Louis River before heading down Falcon Street to Slag Point. Guests shared how they love birding, winter hiking, kayaking, and how we they are all doing our best to not slip on the ice this winter season. As a group we made a few stops along the way to talk about the history of Morgan Park and the U.S. Steel site, Area of Concern history, legacy pollution, and the amazing restoration that was completed in 2024. This newly restored area includes 2 miles of trail, kayak launch, fishing rocks, native plants, and offers a great place for birding. Other topics we chatted about included kayaking and local businesses who offer leisurely guided trips in the summer season, such as Day Tripper, and Black Dog Kayak and SUP.

The St. Louis River Area’s of Concern is 1 of 43 in the Great Lakes Region, set to be delisted by 2030. For more information on the St. Louis River Area of Concern click here, and sign up for our newsletter below.
