2021 St. Louis River Alliance Sustainability Drive
The St. Louis River Alliance (SLRA) is launching a Sustainability Drive from now until December 14th, 2021. In an effort to celebrate recent accomplishments and reconnect to the community we will be holding a variety of fun events. Come learn about our work and find out how you can support a cleaner River!
St. Louis River Area of Concern Update: Kingsbury Bay/Grassy Point project completed!
One of Minnesota DNR’s largest habitat restoration projects is complete. The three-year, $18 million construction project in the St. Louis River estuary near Duluth has restored 230 acres of coastal wetland habitat at Kingsbury Bay and Grassy Point.

Whole Foods Co-op Round-Up Program: VOTE FOR THE ALLIANCE
The St. Louis River Alliance needs your vote! We were selected as one of the top twenty-two local organizations to be considered for the 2022 Give Round-up Program at the Duluth Whole Foods Co-op. ST. LOUIS RIVER AREA OF CONCERN UPDATES: Munger Landing Closer 2022-2023
A contaminated sediment cleanup project is planned for the Munger Landing area, to remove approximately 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediments in 2022-2023.
ST. LOUIS RIVER AREA OF CONCERN UPDATES: Interstate Island
Researchers at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Natural Resources Research Institute have been monitoring bird activity on Interstate Island. With a combination of in-person surveys and a network of 16 trail cameras placed along the edge of the shoreline, they are able to document bird use of the island from spring through fall each year.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Annual Vista Star Boat Tour! We had a great time learning from Area of Concern coordinators about the various projects happening on and near the water, plus up close looks at some of the work being done.
2021 Wild Rice Planting & Photos
Thank you to our member volunteers for coming and helping us plant nearly 500 pounds of manoomin (wild rice) in Kingsbury Bay! We had 17 volunteers and 2 staff helping reseed the estuary.

Area of Concern Updates: Scanlon Reservoir
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency have signed a $6 million agreement to address and clean up contaminated sediment in the Scanlon Reservoir in Scanlon, Minnesota. Slated to begin this fall, the project will employ new remediation technologies to improve the habitat for fish and wildlife.

ST. LOUIS RIVER AREA OF CONCERN UPDATE: Researchers at Duluth’s EPA lab completed a study that sheds light on what is (or isn’t) behind the slow recovery of Lake Sturgeon in the St. Louis River.

St. Louis River Area of Concern Updates: Interstate Island Restoration Project Completion
Here is a “birds eye” view of the completed habitat restoration at Interstate Island. The project was completed in late April.
52,624 cubic yards of dredged materials were beneficially reused to restore or enhance the colonial water bird nesting habitat!
St. Louis River Area of Concern Updates: Cross City Trail detour during Erie Pier remediation
Beginning at the end of June 2021, a portion of the Cross City Trail and adjacent city-owned land will be closed to accommodate work being done in the ponds behind Erie Pier.
