WATCH | The St. Louis River Estuary, Our Home
The St. Louis River Estuary. Our home.
Once an abundant source of life, shimmering with fish and wildlife, birds and wild rice so thick it was described as hay fields on the water. It runs 192 miles through rare bogs, spills over rocky falls and widens into a unique freshwater estuary. Surrounded by fog-draped hills, the river becomes Lake Superior. People have been drawn to the abundance for centuries. And it has generously provided for its inhabitants through the ages. But development and Industrialization dimmed our connection to the source of life and the River was abused and neglected. The life was choked out.
By the 1970’s, devastation of waterways had degraded the quality of life across the nation and the people started to rise up and demand change. The clean water act was passed, and the St. Louis River Estuary was designated as one of 43 Areas of Concern around the Great Lakes in dire need of restoration.
The St. Louis River Alliance was born out of a group of concerned citizens that helped bring people together to clean up the St Louis River, and for decades now, citizens, agencies, and partners have joined forces to care for the river. While there is much left to be done, the river is reflecting that care back to us. Rekindled relationships to our source of life is sparking renewal and healing our communities.
We are stronger, and we are finding new ways to discover how we can live together and thrive, and what it means to care for our home. The cleaner water is generating a sense of hope, and people are remembering their connection.
The original vision of the shimmering river that turns in to Lake Superior is reborn. We invite you to come home to the River.
