Position Summary (Printable PDF): The St. Louis River Alliance is seeking a dedicated Communications & Outreach Coordinator. The Coordinator plays a key role in building relationships between the organization, community members, and the St. Louis River Estuary. This person will lead public engagement efforts, coordinate volunteers and outreach events, support communications, help manage and grow the SLRA's membership base, promote participation in programs including stewardship events, paddling initiatives, educational programming, and the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail.
This is an ideal position for a motivated, self-reliant person who enjoys working with people, organizing meaningful outdoor experiences, and advancing environmental stewardship through community connection and creative communications.
Responsibilities include:
Community Engagement & Outreach
Coordinate community outreach initiatives that expand awareness and access to the St. Louis River Estuary.
Represent the Alliance at community events, tabling opportunities, and partner meetings.
Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, tribal partners, local governments, and recreation groups.
Support inclusive engagement strategies that welcome diverse audiences to river programming.
Communications & Marketing Support
Help develop outreach materials, newsletters, social media content, and event promotions.
Maintain event listings and assist with website updates.
Collect photos, stories, and impact data from programs and events.
Maintain consistent organizational voice, branding, and messaging across platforms.
Membership & Community Support
Support membership recruitment, management, retention, and stewardship efforts.
Assist with membership campaigns, renewals, and outreach communications.
Help communicate the impact of membership through storytelling, events, and digital outreach.
Volunteer Coordination
Recruit, schedule, and support volunteers for events, stewardship activities, and outreach efforts.
Maintain volunteer communications and recognition practices.
Assist with stewardship events such as cleanups, restoration activities, paddling events, and educational programs.
Programs & Events
Assist in planning and implementing public programs, workshops, and community gatherings.
Coordinate logistics including registration, materials, volunteers, and on-site setup.
Support programs connected to river restoration, outdoor recreation, and environmental education.
Partnership Development
Collaborate with regional partners to promote shared initiatives and community engagement.
Support outreach connected to restoration projects and the National Water Trail.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in environmental studies, communications, recreation, education, or related field.
Strong project management, organizational and marketing skills.
Demonstrated writing and communications skills.
Experience coordinating events, volunteers, or community engagement efforts.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong computer and software literacy: Social media platforms, Microsoft Office including Excel spreadsheets, google docs.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather conditions.
Valid driver’s license and ability to transport materials locally.
Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally and walk on uneven surfaces up to 100 yards at a time.
Preferred
Knowledge of the St. Louis River Estuary or Great Lakes watershed issues.
Experience working with volunteers or community-based programs.
Event planning or outreach experience in a nonprofit or environmental organization.
Experience in public speaking and ability to lead/facilitate outreach events.
Familiarity with social media, newsletters, or basic communications tools.
Experience supporting equitable community engagement practices.
Software experience: Little Green Light, Constant Contact, Google, Canva or graphics programs.
