2021 Photo Contest

Throughout 2021, the St. Louis River Alliance (SLRA) hosted a photo contest to celebrate the seasons and beauty of the largest U.S. river that flows into Lake Superior. The SLRA went on a mission to find striking digital images that highlight the diverse flora, wildlife and recreational activities that connect people to their natural habitat.

The contest began on May 3rd, 2021 and closed on October 4th, 2021. We saw many perspectives of life on the river, and really enjoyed seeing all of the beauty participants shared in their photos. Thank you to all the amazing photographers who submitted a photo in the contest. We appreciate your participation and hope there will be future opportunities for you to join in on the fun!

In total we had over 123 photographs entered into the contest and over one thousand people joined us on our mission viewing, sharing, commenting and voting on the photos that were submitted.

As the third ever Season of the St. Louis River Photo Contest, our judges had the difficult task narrowing down the top photographs. After much deliberation, the top three photos in each category were selected.

Also, a BIG thank you to your judges: local artist Annmarie Geniusz, local artist Sarah Glesner, Barb Huberty of Minnesota Pollution Control, Alyssa Johnson local photographer and SLRA staff, and local artist Barbara Crow.

We sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm and willingness of our artists, judges, supporters, friends and visitors for participating in the contest. We look forward to the potential of doing something similar in the future!

Below is a gallery of the submissions for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Background

The St. Louis River Area of Concern (SLRAOC) was designated by the U.S. & Canada under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement because of locally caused, significant environmental impacts that occurred before modern environmental laws were in place.

Since its designation in 1987, efforts by many organizations and funding from many sources have helped correct those historical damages.

This photo contest is an opportunity for members of the public to use their talents to show the diversity of the St. Louis River Estuary and the importance of the remediation and restoration efforts being undertaken there.

Contest Sponsors

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administers the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding supporting this effort

  • The St. Louis River Alliance facilitates and promotes the contest

  • The Area of Concern’s Coordinating Agencies (the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the MN Department of Natural Resources, the MN Pollution Control Agency, and the WI Department of Natural Resources) assist with selecting the winning photos and utilize the photos in SLRAOC communication materials
