SLRCAC Receives Binational Program Environmental Stewardship Award


as Brainstormed at the CAC Planning Retreat, April 27, 1999
  • Land acquisition in Wisconsin (WERCO) and Minnesota (stewardship)
  • Initiating and supporting River Watch Program
  • Connors Point cleanup and improvement
  • Nemadji River Project and subsequent clean water funds for implementation
  • Hosting IJC meeting in 1995
  • Storm drain stenciling
  • Funds distributed to MPCA and WDNR because of successful RAP (e.g., R-EMAP)
  • Invited to submit proposal for funds for habitat work
  • HTAC revised and working with new purpose as per recommendations of CAC's former Institutional Arrangements Committee
  • River Quest (CAC sparked discussions that led to original event; continues to support annual event)
  • Forum for discussion, convener of diverse groups and interests
  • Stewardship Awards have recognized contributions of about 30 people
  • Technical advances, Internet communications
  • First Head of the Lakes River Rally (October 1998)
  • Monitoring and delineation of hot spots
  • Providing energy and impetus to other efforts

  • Impetus for Superfund Site work (recommendations for USX site reconsidered because of RAP/CAC concern)
  • Incorporated into a nonprofit, with bylaws, executive director, office space, logo - a viable presence working on the river
  • Policy to eliminate waste discharge from boats has been adopted nationwide
  • Increased public awareness about the river, and a focal point for action
  • Secured more than $144,000 in grant funds in the past two years
  • Work on controlling mercury (WLSSD listened to us, and now the City of Superior is following with mercury reduction strategies)
  • Thousands of hours contributed by CAC members and board
  • Bio-sentinel program teachers are so involved and supportive that the program has a life of its own and will continue with or without CAC funding
  • Habitat restoration projects at Grassy Point, Hearding Island and Wisconsin Point
  • Completed and implemented lots of good recommendations
  • Completion of a great Stage I RAP document that identifies and summarizes a lot of useful environmental information
  • Improvement in wastewater treatment and stormwater controls in Superior
  • Increased attention to contaminated sediment remediation in Wisconsin and Minnesota
  • Coastal wetlands evaluation for the St. Louis River estuary in Wisconsin and Minnesota
  • St. Louis River and habitat concerns (regarding flow, etc.) incorporated into FERC's St. Louis River dam re-licensing
  • River tours - Vista tour 1998, IJC tour with history of river 1995, other river tours
  • Education of citizens in local environmental and land use planning issues, preparatory to their serving on local governing boards (zoning, land conservation, long range land use planning, etc.)
  • Broad reach, with our members serving on other boards, committees and citizen groups.
