Clough Island Potential Regulatory Authority Contacts
The St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee (SLRCAC) Executive Committee (EC) discussed the sale and proposed development on Clough Island during the July 2002 EC meeting. The SLRCAC is intended to be a community facilitator and the EC feels it is important to communicate technical and scientific information to all parties. The EC decided that it is important that the public knows that there are multiple issues, that regulatory approvals and permits are required, and that the public has the right to review the process, including a public hearing, for all permits and approvals issued. Given those concerns, we have developed the following list of regulatory authorities with the contact names and addresses of the regulatory agencies. Contacts to authorities will depend on the site of proposed actions/development plans.
As you know, the SLRCAC has been working for a long time with multiple partners on the development of the Lower St. Louis River Habitat Plan. This technical document as well as the Remedial Action Plan references the loss of habitat as a primary threat to the St. Louis River Area Of Concern. These documents include both scientific and technical information and can be found on our web site. With the St. Louis River estuary being one of only two major U.S. wetlands providing the bioproductivity for Lake Superior, the wetlands surrounding the island are nationally significant.
