The St. Louis River Alliance’s 66-page, full color edition of “On The Water Guide for Paddlers and Boaters” is available in our office and at local businesses. While this guide is not intended for navigational purposes, it provides a wealth of information for anyone wishing to explore the river by boat.

The SLRA first published this guide in 2001, and this new edition has information that was in the original edition, as well as expanded and updated sections. This edition includes sections of the river that were not part of the original guide.

There are now maps of 14 sections of the river from the Fond du Lac dam to Allouez Bay. Each map includes points of interest and/or history for that section. There is also sections on the geologic, natural and cultural history of the river, including pre- and postindustrial history. It also has information about the habitat along the river as well as plants, mammals, fish and birds. New features also include Guidelines for Safe Boating on the St Louis River There is an expanded bird list as well as information about the recovery effort of the Lake Sturgeon.

The St. Louis River Alliance staff was assisted in this new edition with input from local boaters, resident, local history experts and partnering agencies. This project was funded in part by the Coastal Zone Management, in conjunction with the Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program.
