Minutes: Meeting of the Board of Directors
October 24, 2001

Meeting was called to order by Wisconsin Co-Chair Diane Moore at the Superior Public Library. Members present introduced themselves.

Presentation:
Larry Weber, science instructor at Marshall School in Duluth, author of "Butterflies of the North Woods" was the keynote speaker. He also writes a weekly phenology column for the Duluth Budgeteer newspaper. His photographs of butterflies were excellent and his talk was full of little-known and interesting facts. The talk generated much discussion and many questions.

Interlude:
During the break, refreshments were served and attendees had an opportunity to network and look at displays and information concerning Stewardship, Mercury, Sediment and Toxics, Stormwater Management, Habitat Plan, and Historic Information about the St. Louis River and the Citizens Action Committee. CAC memberships were available.

Business Meeting:
• Minutes of the May 23, 2001 Board of Directors meeting were approved as mailed and e-mailed.
• Moved, Seconded, Passed to approve a resolution that CAC funds be used solely for CAC grant agreements, keeping track of expenditures without co-mingling finances.

Director's Report:
• Stewardship Award nomination forms are available. Nominations are due in the CAC office by November 15.
• First issue of the newsletter "River News" was distributed. Plans are for publication of the newsletter two times each year. Articles are being solicited. Phil Monson, Minnesota Co-Chair, is making "River News" a reality.
• Nemadji River -- LandSat coverage complete for Minnesota portion of basin. Great Lakes Protection Fund gave money to Douglas County to complete Wisconsin portion of basin; coverage is a tool that can be used to address open space where sediment originates.
• Great Lakes Protection Fund -- $20K to be used for Habitat projects and PAH allocation; ties into contaminated sediment database (Judy Crane).
• Wisconsin Senator David Obey may be keynoter next August to document successes of last 13 years.
• Wisconsin DNR grant will cover stewardship program costs.
• Canoe trip in 2002 will go from Boy Scout Landing to Billings Park; Will Munger, Chair.
• River Guide copies available. Monies from Beneficiaries Group available to do a second volume: Stryker Bay to Superior Entrance. Jessica Hirsch is gathering info.
• Financial position is better. Private foundation dollars are being sought (e.g. Beldon Foundation). Many grants require matching non-federal dollars; need to increase matching fund base. Appreciation for work Lynelle Hanson, Executive Director, is doing was expressed with applause.

Other:
• Draft Habitat Plan is getting done.
• Talk about Superior Days when community goes to Madison to lobby at the State Capitol Feb. 25-28. Do we need to get legislative ear? or thank Madison? There will be an issue meeting in December; notice will be sent to CAC office. CAC is concerned about Clough Island future.

Nan Stokes, Secretary
