Meeting was called to order by Diane Moore, Wisconsin Co-chair. Topical Presentations: Tom Duffus, Program Director, NE Minnesota, Nature Conservancy, told history about the organization and its non-confrontational methods used to achieve environmental protection over the years. Nature Conservancy has a paid professional staff and volunteers. Sometimes it is difficult not to be confrontational, but once an organization decides to take an activist stance, it is impossible to go back to being non-confrontational. Credibility can be lost. Steve Hopkins, EPA, Region 5, Multi-media Coordinator for Lake Superior Basin, believes this area is unique because of its visionary environmental leadership, its use of cooperative methods, and public-private educational partnerships. People live here because they want to live here: they are "place-based people". Because this area has a resource-based economy, there is a need to preserve those resources. People realize it is possible to have a strong, healthy economy and a good, healthy environment. The CAC has been discussing whether this organization should be confrontational or non-confrontational in its dealings with concerned citizens around St. Louis Bay. These presentations were important in getting started with further dialogue. Business Meeting: Members present introduced themselves. Minutes of the quarterly board meeting in March were approved as distributed. Karen Plass, former CAC Executive Director, was presented with a gift. Karen is presently with Minnesota DNR. Lynelle Hanson, newly elected Executive Director, was introduced and gave her report. There is a cooperative agreement with the Wisconsin DNR, to look at the State of the St. Louis River 2000 and publish a brochure. Lynelle has been working with Len Anderson and the St. Louis River Board. US Fish & Wildlife wants to give $20K toward Habitat Plan. Need an answer by 5/26/00 (or 5/31/00). Habitat Core Group should look at the proposal. Moved, Seconded, Passed to accept US F&W cooperative agreement, pending approval of Habitat Core Group and incorporating any necessary changes. New Business:
Workgroup Reports: Stewardship: Clean-up of river from Boy Scout Landing to USX wire-mill pond went well. LS&MR hauled debris. Habitat: Working with contractor to re-format plan. Pat Collins wrote report to contractor; waiting for response.
Plans are to present Alden Lind with a plaque at the October Board of Directors meeting in recognition of his environmental efforts for Lake Superior. Nan Stokes, Secretary
