1998 Environmental Stewardship Awards


1998 Awards (Presented January 1999)

Leonard Anderson, retired Cloquet biology teacher, for a long history of outstanding work in environmental education, including development of the River Watch Program. (Sally Gibson Award).

Cloquet High School Environmental Club, for development and implementation of a broad range of programs encompassing environmental education, monitoring and service. (Milton E. Pelletier Award).

Potlatch Corporation, for remediating the east slope of their landfill, which borders on the St. Louis River. (Randy Marshall Award).

Ed Johnson, natural history teacher at Northland Secondary School, Superior, for embracing the Water Watch Program, and carrying environmental stewardship and service learning beyond the classroom and into the community. (Teacher/Student category).

Lake Superior Toxic Reduction Committee (City of Superior Public Works Department, Wastewater Division), for public outreach and education to reduce discharges of mercury. (Municipality/Government Agency category).

1998 Special Recognition (Presented January 1999)

Alden Lind, for Lifetime Achievement in Environmental Stewardship. (Special category).


John and Jane Fisher-Merritt, Fisher-Merritt Farm, Wrenshall Twp., for providing a model of chemical-free, sustainable agriculture. (Special category).
