1997 Environmental Stewardship Awards


1997 Awards (Presented October 1997)

Rep. Willard Munger, Duluth, for outstanding efforts to manage and protect the St. Louis River throughout a distinguished career in public service. Award received by Willard Munger, Jr. (Sally Gibson Award).

The Miller Creek Task Force, Duluth, for raising community awareness about nonpoint pollution, and restoring and protecting Miller Creek. (Milton E. Pelletier Award).

Koppers Industries, Superior, for installing a system to process waste oil, thus eliminating trucking 6,000 gallons of oily waste per day to Superior's Wastewater Treatment Plant. (Randy Marshall Award).

Stowe School, Duluth, for developing a comprehensive environmental education program and extending it into the community. (School category).

Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD), Duluth, for exemplary efforts to reduce mercury in wastewater.(Government/Agency category).

1997 Special Recognition (Presented October 1997)

Mary Ann Koth, Brian Fredrickson, Jack Ezell, Jean Longenecker and Phyllis Clevenger, for CAC leadership. (Special category).

Willard Munger, St. Louis River Board, Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Minnesota Power, for land acquisition and donation on the Minnesota side of the St. Louis River, AND Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Douglas County, Wisconsin, for land acquisition on the Wisconsin side of the St. Louis River. Together, these projects permanently preserved and protected 34,000 acres in the St. Louis River watershed! (Special category).
